October 2007

Have you tried crawling on sandy caves, smelled “guano” an excrement of bats? trekking underground river? wheew! tiring but the fun and thrill are always there giving me the motivation to move on - for 5 hours wandering underground!

Last September 2 this year, we were invited by the Municipality of Monkayo to explore its Cave - known to locals as Combilan at Barangay Casoon, Monkayo, Compostela Valley.

We travelled afternoon from Davao City to Monkayo on September 1 and was welcomed by Municipal Tourism Officer of Monkayo  waiting for us, we arrived at around 8 pm in the evening.

Going to Barangay Casoon is like a ride of you life! because you are riding with the famous habal habal (a motorcycle attached with a rack/seat on both sides and at the back) The driver will carry 6 to 9 persons and the ride is really really exiting - i mean risky and dangerous.

habal.jpg

The road going to the cave is not that smooth so prepare for the ride of your lifetime, as what the habal-habal driver said to us, especially for the first timers ” sabay sabay lang sa flow sa dagan sa motor… padala lang sa liko liko…isipin nyo nalang na you were riding on a bus… ayaw pangusog..pama-ulan lang mo ana ” and all first timers are shouting when roads are going uphill or downhill… mud holes…

We walked from jump off site at around 9am for about 10 minutes .. until we reached the mouth of the cave… there are two entrance… first we moved to the big cave and explore for about 3 hrs… the cave has a broad mouth entrance and becomes progressively narower inside. The first cave have a cathedral look inside with huge stalactites and stalagmites with different formations… calcium deposits that glows when hit by a light- spectacle view!. There is this part of the cave that let us crawl for up to a 18 inches of vertical clearance…. for about 150 meters! we exited on to another side of the mountain and walked back to jump off site to take our meal for lunch.

Looks familiar isn’t it? Well, that’s the way it is….

After lunch we returned to the site and started trekking… the second cave has a narrower entrance and we were trailing on a underground river… up to the other end… there are no huge cathedral like location inside second cave… we were just following the gushing flow of cold chilling water. At the end of the cave we decided to take a dip into this water hole since we are all muddy and drenched with water.

It’s 4pm when we are all dressed up and visit the Mayors office to recieved our certificates. Not all events were posted in this blog - mahaba pa kasi.. ehehe

Happy and fullfilled.

A person involved in spelunking has to have his own safety equipment, because a lot can go wrong while exploring a cave. There are caves that are narrow and then broaden at the interiors, and then there are caves that are broad at the mouth and get progressively narrower as you go in. A person spelunking has to be able to negotiate all these situations properly.

A standard safety gear must be used when spelunking and this include but no t limited to helmets(wala kami) , torch lights or even halogen lamps, proper apparel to suit the activity of exploration, besides the standard safety kits like first aid, adequate rations, etc.

It’s worth it!

Thanks to the Municipal tourism officer of Monkayo for the warm welcome….

I found a new way of stretching after running - Static stretching.

The best place that static stretches will be at the end of my run as part of the cool-down, not at the beginning of a running session. Static exercises help bring our body back toward a state of rest and recovery and allow us to relax and lengthen the muscles that we have put under stress during my run.

Placing static stretches at the beginning of a training session, on the other hand, tends to interrupt the natural flow of an optimal warm-up and fails to prepare you fully for the dynamic movements that follow.

Dynamic Mobility exercises warm you up, stretch you out and keep you moving as you make the transition from resting to highenergy activity. You’ll feel a sense of warmth and relaxation in your muscles – and perspire lightly by the end of your five- to seven-minute warm-up period.

Dynamic Mobility exercises work on joints from your neck to your toes - and if you’re wondering why you should attempt to expand the mobility of your neck and shoulders when the ‘prime movers’ during your workout are probably your legs, wonder no more.

Since I do my run solo with no running body, it’s good to be aware of this new technique to prevent injury- this is called Sport Science.

I am very happy na hindi umulan kanina that is why I got this new running route early in the morning at started running at 4:00am. weeeeh!

I’ve been a fan of linux since Red Hat ver 7. I used it on my previous work as a radius authentication server for  those good old dial-up ISP way back 2001.

A lot has changed from Linux, I am using Ubuntu - fiesty fawn edition since its release and don’t have a hard time installing it. As far as my experience is concerned, I have no problem on Video display, Audio, my HP printer, webcam, internet, usb flash disk  and all other pheriperals connected to my rig.

Ubuntu startup screen

Startup screen of Ubuntu .

Good part is that there are so many support on softwares that are ready for download from editing video, editing audio, playing movies and mp3’s.

I already tried using wifi feature of Ubuntu  using  notebook and I have no problem connecting on hotspots area in the city.  One thing for sure on Linux  platform is that seldom no virus threatened this system - Almost none on my part - Great!

Almost all format of file extensions are applicable to ubuntu.. Even .exe file! Just use Windows emulator like Cedega or Wine.

Linux surely starts to evade desktop based computers and not just for servers anymore and it is more user friendly and is adapting windows based environment less blue screen of death! BSOD.

Aside from Ubuntu  as my primary OS I am still using Windows XP. Dual boot system.7

Haven’t you wondered what it is like viewing Davao city from the top of the Philippines? - Mt. Apo.

Aside from viewing Davao city from Jack’s Ridge, aboard airplane, high rise buildings like Marco polo, Pryce Tower or even from  www.wikimapia.org.

This impressive view of Davao city early in the morning @ 0450 hrs captivates me while waiting for the sunrise.

As you’ve  seen in the image, the first appearance of light in the sky as the Sun rises at the beginning of a new day  while darkness still covered Davao city.

Last April of 2007, I climbed Mount Apo for the fourth time and it really never ceases me to always think of coming back.

The image header that I used with this blog is a standing view from the top of the Philippines facing  mountain ranges Bukidnon.

This shot was taken 1751Hrs  last April 6, 2007.

What’s the story behind your  custom image header?

” Running is the most natural of all athletic activities in the sense that most of us start running as children and continue throughout the course of our lives. “

The human body is beautifully designed to run. To help achieve comfort in running, I have these basic “techniques” of mine aside from a good pair of shoes and socks, shorts and running top:

1. Lean forward slightly.
Look at the postures of top runners and you’ll see that they all lean forward slightly. To help yourself, try fixing your gaze about 10 to 15 metres in front of you.

2. Strike the ground lightly with your heel first.
If you were to slow down the foot action whilst running, you would see that you land on your heel and then roll forward, through the ball of your foot, pushing off with your toes.

3. Starting your running session.
At the beginning of a run, keep your stride short. Too long a stride incorporates a high kick at the back of the stride, which quickly tires the hamstring muscles. As your legs begin to loosen up on the run, then you can lengthen your stride.

4. Use your arms.
You will be surprised how much your arms work during a run. On hills, you pump with your arms to help you, or you should do. Sometimes, if you haven’t run for a long time, your arms will be more tired than you legs at the end of a run! Your hands, arms and shoulders should be relaxed but working when you run. The hands and forearms shouldn’t cross over the body as they swing back and forth. Nor should they be held too high. Don’t tense your hand into a fist. To avoid this, trying running with your hands held open. Don’t hunch your shoulders.

5. Keep your breathing relaxed.
Breathe from your diaphragm, not from your chest. Think of the wall of your stomach as a bellows: when it bulges outward, it is sucking in air, when it pushes inwards; it is forcing air out of your lungs.Since I have those list above, I’ve got to remove my running itch this coming Saturday, October 14 and join Merco fun run and on next week after Merco fun run is Bantay Bata charity fun run…

Yesterday, I woke up early in the morning at around 4:15 am and geared up and scratch my running itch from Ma-a to Victoria Plaza route San Rafael and Marfori Subs and back.

Wheew! What a great feeling! Prepared myself for a whole day event called WORK. hehehe

Whew! a very tiring week at work but it’s great! that means I got a job! =) “System alert! primary network link down. . . ” This is what I recieved, a sms message when our system got a problem like power failure, tempreature inside server room goes high or worst, a water leak.

It is a great innovation that I can still know whats going on inside the server room even if i’m here at home. cons- it’s annoying when sometimes our link provider got a problem of our leased line and it happened early in the morning at 1am or 2am… and sms messages received adding in my cellphones inbox! waah!

Defense

Sitting all day at the office seemed i’m relaxed and not doing much, but hey! chaos has begun! virtually! user can’t login to network, link saturated, slow transaction on ERP

Solution? since the problem is not typically at my end, I entertained all users concerns and informed them that I am making a way to solve their problems and Informed our main office on what’s going on at our site.

The best part is? I survived the day with peace of mind and faced tomorrow as a new challenges .

I think this is why we are born with — toil and survive. Accept ordeals as a challenge. Smile and have fun while working… I think of my job as my hobby. =) ciao!

I savored the extreme and the conquest.

It is really great to climb mountains with beautiful sceneries and see nature at its best. The most important thing is when we reached these higher places - In our lives…. memories will last forever and we have something to lookback and said “Naah.. naka-adto nako anang lugara ug lingaw ang experience!” (I’ve been into that place and the expercience is great!)

The pleasure of exeeding one’s percieved human limitations. The fun and excitement of this sport and all the wonders and extremes of nature and the ecstasy of competition and winning.

Since this challenges packed with so much life! Unfortunately, not everyone can take advantage because of the demands on energy and physical fitness are high.

Roof of the Philippines

To take advantage of all these potential invigorating but extremely demanding thrills ?

1.Want it. You have to know that you want the excitement. Not everyone does. Many people are content living a “soft”, comfortable life in sterile, safe, and stress-free environments. That’s perfectly fine. That’s their happiness.

Some of us are just “crazy” enough to leave all the comforts of home to trek painfully up a mountain or dive dangerously into the sea. Some want so desperately to find out how fast he can rollerblade down a hill or how often he can beat his friend in lawn tennis.

If you want to know if you will survive three days in the wild, if you want to feel the rush of being the first to cross the finish line, if you want to hear applause for your innovative dance routine… if you want the thrill, you can get it.

2.Prepare for it. Any marathoner, swimmer, and speed racer would say he is who he is now because of months, even years, of diligent training and constant practice. Preparing for an extra-challenging activity requires mental, psychological, and physical training.

This could entail special diet, specific exercise, strength training, and even meditation. Learning the right skills and the correct moves, and taking on the appropriate mindset, are all necessary. And best acquired from professional mentors. Hours of perfect practice makes perfect. And when you have gone through the basics, memorized the moves, and primed your flesh and psyche for the challenge…

3.Do it. The first time is always the toughest. Breaking into a totally new experience can even be traumatic. But for most adventure-seekers, the good or bad encounter of the first try is what inspires them to do it again and again. They learn, they improve, they try again. And with each attempt they build up an addictive high that eventually becomes the ultimate goal of the activity. Ask the basketball players. The martial artists and the professional dancers. The cyclists and the ice skaters. Whether they engage in these strenuous activities as a career or as a hobby, they will say they do it because they feel good doing it. They feel alive! And because there’s still a lot more to experience out there, you can continue to feel alive if you

4. Try something else. When you’ve played competition volleyball for several years, with shining trophies side by side on the top shelf, why not consider being a champion in badminton this time? And didn’t you always wonder if you had the nerve to go rock climbing? How about spelunking?

Only your own perception of your limitations will hold you back from experiencing all the adventure the world offers. Age didn’t stop me from persistently strapping a 19-kilo pack on my back and lugging it up steep terrain.
